Finding Escape Through Books

"Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are." - Mason Cooley

I've lost count of the hours I've spent in hospital waiting rooms and doctor's offices this year. It's been a whirlwind of appointments, tests, and treatments, but through it all, books have been my constant companion.

Reading during Chemo

Thankfully, I always have a book handy, snug in one of my Florrie book sleeves. When I stumbled upon the quote above, it resonated deeply with me. Yes, there have been moments of anxiety and fear, waiting for daunting tests like CT scans or enduring long chemotherapy sessions. But in those moments, books have been my escape, my refuge from reality.

During these literary adventures, I've imagined what book the mermonkey would recommend in the eerie bookshop of Eerie-on-Sea. I've chuckled at the relatable poetry of Hollie McNish and delved into mysteries, solving crimes over cups of tea and slices of cake in Caribbean islands or quaint Cornish towns. I've even embarked on magical journeys as a talking cat, rescuing books from labyrinthine depths.

On a practical note, books have been my guide through the maze of breast cancer diagnosis, surgery options, and treatment paths. They've armed me with knowledge and courage, easing the journey ahead.

Books are more than just stories; they're portals to other worlds, catalysts for imagination, and sources of comfort in uncertain times.

That's why I'm refocusing Florrie. I want others to experience the transformative power of a good book, to lose themselves in the joy of storytelling. And I hope to inspire a new generation of readers to embark on their own literary adventures.

For those concerned about this shift, fear not—I'll still be crafting books. The creative process brings me immense joy, and I couldn't imagine giving it up.

So, I'm curious: what books have you escaped with this year? Share your recommendations in the comments below. Let's spread the love of reading and embark on new adventures together.

Until next time!
